Top 3 Unbelievable Water Softener Myths Debunked
Share This

If you have a water softener, you’re likely experiencing many benefits. However, if you’re on the fence about them, many misconceptions could hold you back from experiencing all the benefits a water softener offers. So, what are some of the misconceptions you have in mind? What are these myths, and how do we dispel them? Learn more about the top three water softener myths, and watch us debunk them below.

The Level of Sodium in Soft Water Makes It Unhealthy

This myth can’t be further from the truth. Sodium in soft water is incredibly small compared to most other dietary sources of sodium. Ion exchange within the water softening process with exceedingly high hardness levels—think 76 grains per gallon—of hard water adds far less sodium to your drinking water. This amount is even less than what you find in drinks that meet the USDA’s Low Sodium labeling regulations. For instance, it’s difficult for hard water to exceed 40 grains per gallon in certain areas of Tennessee.

“Salt-Free” Water Softeners Are Better

The idea that salt-free water softeners are better isn’t necessarily true. These water softener systems fail to remove magnesium and calcium, which are two minerals many homeowners want their water softeners to eliminate! These systems only work in very particular situations, which are rare. Hard water, which harbors these minerals, can negatively impact your health in many ways. Choosing the incorrect water softener can harm you and your appliances.

Soft Water Doesn’t Rinse Soap Off Well

Some people believe that only hard water can remove dirt, oils, and soap in the shower. However, the soap does its job of removing dirt, and even though it may feel “slick” against your skin as if the soap is still there, it’s not. This is a major myth about water softeners, but don’t let it stop you from investing in this important home feature.

Now that we’ve debunked all these myths, you should feel much more confident getting a water softener in the future. It’ll only do great things for your water’s quality and health!
